House Warming
House Warming - SOLD
We had won a national championship that year. A wildfire had evacuated the city for the first part of the season and we had to do a year's worth of work in two weeks just to play. Coach Spence was someone you noticed without knowing why at first. Then you saw him on game day.
The first game back at our home stadium. Hundreds of people in the stands, deafening. Coach Spence came out first, sunglasses on, a look that said we mean business. Then from behind him the players burst through flames and smoke, Canadian flags whipping in the wind. In a forest full of impressive trees this one glowed brighter than all of them.
I made this piece as a gift for that end of season gathering. I only found out later it wasn't his house warming at all. He laughed when I told him and gave me a squeeze on the shoulder. Simple appreciation.
