an exploration of the intersection of beauty and grief.

It centers two translucent butterflies whose delicate wings both veil and reveal a field of glowing tears below. The pair functions as companion figures. Their tears are not only expressions of sorrow but the means by which grief becomes bearable. Through touch and movement they gather and help carry the weight, holding it between them until, in time, the burden is taken away, leaving acceptance and a softened, fond memory.

Visually, the painting balances finely rendered ornament with bright washes and areas of abrasion. Layered glazes keep earlier gestures visible, so the image itself is a record of mourning integrated into beauty rather than concealed by it. The butterflies’ luminosity and fragile symmetry invite attraction; the softened ground and partially erased passages insist on history and loss.Conceptually, the work proposes beauty as a carrier and companion to grief. The butterflies enact a slower kind of agency. They do not erase pain but attend to it, transform its weight, and ultimately release it into remembrance. Butterfly Tears asks viewers to hold that paradox, to accept consolation, to mourning together and to trust that tenderness can help grief become a bearable memory. It invites the viewer to remind themselves to take the time they need to take care of themselves and nourish their inner butterflies.

Butterfly Tears - the inspirational poem

Blooming petals of my blue flowers of sorrow
Unfurl in a burst of instant disbelief.
So long you stood as a pillar of strength
Now crumbled to the mortal you are.

Each tear that drops paints the flowers in vibrant hues
A cascade of washes glow in iridescent light.
The wings of the butterflies pound gently in my ears
And light my way in luminous pink hues of love.

Their wings caress my hurting soul
and rest my weary head on a pillow of gold
The embrace of warmth
takes me to my healing bed.
