Every subject I paint seriously gets a proper introduction first, sketches, studies, time spent just looking. This is where the butterfly and I met formally.
It sounds strange given how long butterflies have lived in my work as symbol and metaphor, always guiding, always in motion, but this is the first time I slowed down enough to paint one directly. What came out of that was this study, quiet, attentive, the beginning of a longer conversation.
