This one came from a still life prompt challenge, painted from a reference image in a hotel room in Tallinn, Estonia. Some of my best small works happen in transit, a limited kit, an unfamiliar room, nothing to do but focus on the problem in front of you.
 
The problem here was light on a shiny, stretched surface. Balloon animals look simple. Capturing the way light wraps around that kind of reflective form in watercolour, a medium that punishes overworking, is anything but.
 
Small, cheerful, technically honest.
 
A good piece for a shelf, a desk, or anywhere that could use something that doesn't take itself too seriously.
